Citizens for Responsible Energy Development

CRED’s mission is to ensure that citizens have a voice in energy decisions, decisions that affect our lives, finances and quality of life. We expect access and input to these decisions and further expect that these decisions be made in an ‘open’ manner.

New York has been inundated with proposals to build wind turbines and wind turbine ‘farms’ or ‘parks’. Unfortunately, most of us (and our local governments) only hear from the power companies. Many of our local governments make decisions based on one-sided input, in undue haste and without input from informed citizens. Many of these decisions are essentially made before public hearings and, by the time the citizens have the opportunity to voice their concerns, the issue is essentially closed.

CRED will endeavor to provide you with information on this critical issue via our web site www.credny.org e-mail, local media outlets and, hopefully, public meetings. We will provide you with addresses/phone numbers for our local, state and federal officials. And we will give you links to other wind energy sites.

CRED will also raise concerns regarding critical issues that we feel are being shorted, such as (but not limited to): placement of the turbines, size of the turbines, noise, noise measurement methodology, financial impact on home and property value, financial benefits in favor of the power companies, impact on the water table, loss of state subsidies, abandonment of turbines, and penalties (if any) if turbine companies fail to maintain standards (such as noise levels).

Passed the 50-user mark

Submitted by EffieRover on Wed, 02/21/2007 - 11:54am.

I am pleased to see that the LINY network has just passed the mark of 50 registered users. Since the average user-to-reader ration is 1:100, that puts us at about 5,000 readers. I am delighted!

I hope you're finding some good facts and interesting discussion re:wind power generation. If you're lurking here, feel free to sign up for an account so that you can subscribe to a thread or topic and be sent an email whenever an update is posted. Wind turbine accident sparks widespread safety talk

Submitted by EffieRover on Mon, 02/19/2007 - 11:21am.

HIGASHIDORIMURA, Japan -- Japanese officials are investigating the safety of foreign-made wind turbines began after a recent accident in Higashidorimura.

A 223-foot generator on the wind farm in the Aomori Prefecture fell when the concrete base cracked, The Daily Yomiuri reported. The steel rods that were meant to support it and secure it to the base were left.

Officials said the reason for the crash was still unknown but it was not likely the fall was caused by strong winds. It's designed to hold up in winds up to 134 mph, which is a high-rise building standard applied to wind turbines.

Welcome Hamlin Preservation Group!

Submitted by EffieRover on Thu, 02/15/2007 - 3:46pm.

Boy, I have to add Monroe county to our list now. Anyway, welcome to the Hamlin Preservation Group -- http://hamlin.livinginnewyork.org -- folks commenting on a proposed installation of turbines near Hamlin Beach State Park.

What I understand about this project: the turbines are to be placed on land near the park - not out over the water. There are whole great gobs of implications there. Hope that this community can help you sort things out.

They'd like you to think turbines are about 60' tall

They'd like you to think turbines are about 60' tall

Or maybe smaller. I almost laughed when I saw this. They're very good at taking photos like this. What is not clear is that the turbine is quite a bit farther back from the house and the windmill.

Those boxes near the turbine are, I think, double-stacked shipping containers, which would reach the house roof if they sat right next to it. Imagine the house that small and you're getting closer...

Comments Will Be Accepted Until March 13, 2007

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that it is providing the public an additional 60 days to offer their comments on a preliminary global warming rule that will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants - a major contributor to global warming. The new deadline for comments is March 13, 2007.

Wind power along Lake Erie just might fly

Submitted by EffieRover on Fri, 02/09/2007 - 12:44pm.

Ohio leaders propose a windy addition to the Lake Erie horizon - massive wind turbines that would crank out megawatts and spin off research, development and jobs.

An energy task force will recommend to Cuyahoga County commissioners next month that the region pursue a demonstration project of four to 10 turbines, spinning at least three miles out on Lake Erie.

It would be an unprecedented venture - while European countries have water-borne windmills, the United States has none, task force officials said. And there are no freshwater wind turbines in the world, they said.

Going aloft for wind power

Submitted by EffieRover on Thu, 02/08/2007 - 4:55pm.

[Jan 2007] In another twist on wind power, inventors are designing kites and balloons to generate electricity.

The wind industry is undergoing rapid growth as utilities, prompted by government incentives, seek out cleaner sources of power generation. Typically, these commercial-grade projects involve large wind turbines, which stand 100 to 400 feet high.

Kites and balloons are not widely used, and they face some of the same challenges as traditional wind turbines, such as bird deaths and complaints over location. But that isn't stopping people from coming up with "flying" wind generators.
